Lt. Governor Primavera and Brigadier General Laura L. Clellan Announce Historic AmeriCorps and National Guard Partnership to Increase Service in Colorado

Saturday, April 1, 2023

“Members in Colorado’s National Guard and AmeriCorps programs are service-minded, collaborative, and strive to make a difference in local communities across our state everyday. By providing cross-program participation, we are able to expand the impact of the Guard and AmeriCorps programs while providing service members greater opportunities for educational grants and professional development,” said Lt. Governor Primavera.

Serve Colorado and the Colorado National Guard will work together to share opportunities to serve in both the National Guard and AmeriCorps to incoming, current, and exiting servicemembers and AmeriCorps members. Serving with AmeriCorps can provide National Guard servicemembers with additional professional development and educational opportunities in a wide range of fields including education, climate, and health. Service with the National Guard is an opportunity for AmeriCorps members to expand their  state and  national service.

"This partnership between the Colorado National Guard and AmeriCorps is an example of our continued efforts to build on, and invest in, the greatest asset the State of Colorado has: our people. Guardsmen and women in Colorado have already volunteered to go above and beyond in serving their nation, state, and local communities. Through this historic partnership, we will empower our servicemembers to continue to serve their local communities through community programs, all while earning benefits that will allow them to grow and develop into our State's next generation of leaders," said Brigadier General Laura L. Clellan.

Serve Colorado will work with AmeriCorps programs across Colorado to provide priority status to Colorado National Guard service members in select programs throughout the state. AmeriCorps positions vary in duration and geographic area.

“The decision of the Colorado National Guard and AmeriCorps to combine recruiting efforts is not only an historic event, but it is also a symbolic collaboration between two organizations that historically attract the best Americans that Colorado has to offer. The ability for the State to offer Coloradans the dual opportunity to lead their state through military service and serve their communities via a tour with AmeriCorps represents an unprecedented opportunity for citizens throughout the state,” said Tony Gheradini, Executive Director Colorado Department of Personnel and Administration and Commissioner on Governor’s Commission on Community Service.

Serve Colorado and the Colorado National Guard will be working together to create a new joint recruiting page for this effort. Individuals interested in serving in the Colorado National Guard and AmeriCorps are encouraged to visit serve.colorado.gov to view AmeriCorps opportunities in the state and email servecolorado@state.co.us
