Under Polis Administration, Colorado Secures official Federal Designation as Tech Hub, Positions State as Global Quantum Leader

Friday, October 20, 2023

DENVER - This year, Governor Polis and the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) announced a new public-private initiative, TechHubNow!, to strategically position Colorado for designation as a Regional Technology and Innovation Hub (Tech Hub) under the CHIPS and Science Act. Today, Colorado was notified by the Biden administration that the state has been designated as a Tech Hub focused on the advancement of the quantum industry.

This month in a bipartisan push, Governor Polis, Speaker Julie McCluskie, House Majority Leader Monica Duran, House Minority Leader Mike Lynch, House Assistant Majority Leader Rose Pugliese, Senate President Steve Fenberg, Senate Majority Leader Robert Rodriguez, Senate Minority Leader Paul Lundeen, and Senate Assistant Minority Leader Bob Gardner wrote a bipartisan letter to Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo and the Department of Commerce to formalize their strong support for the Elevate Quantum Consortium and its designation by the Economic Development Administration (EDA) as a Regional Technology and Innovation Hub focused on quantum information science.

“The quantum sector is one of the key industries of tomorrow, and I’m thrilled the Biden administration is awarding Colorado a TechHub designation for quantum technology. We will take full advantage of this decision to help create jobs, and support businesses and entrepreneurs because Colorado is the best place for tech and innovation,” said Colorado Governor Polis.

Colorado leads the world in quantum science and in the concentration of quantum organizations and quantum jobs. Leading quantum companies, including Quantinuum, Infleqtion, Maybell, and others, call Colorado home and Atom Computing is putting forward an investment of over $100 million to scale operations in the state. Four Colorado scientists have won Nobel Prizes for quantum research.

With the Tech Hub designation, Elevate Quantum will focus on accelerating the transition of cutting-edge quantum research from the laboratory to the market, facilitate a vibrant startup and scale-up ecosystem, and build a diverse and inclusive workforce. The Elevate Quantum Tech Hub designation positions Colorado to apply for and secure federal funding opportunities to advance the industry.
