Bayfield is situated in the eastern part of La Plata County in southwestern Colorado. It is located about 18 miles east of Durango and 50 miles west of Pagosa Springs on Highway 160. The San Juan Mountain range is located to the east and the La Plata Mountains loom to the west. Closer to Town is the HD Mountain Range, where many Bayfield residents like to escape for hikes and peaceful outdoor experiences. The Town is nestled in the Pine River Valley next to the Los Piños River. There is ample National Forest and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land surrounding the area which offers many recreational and hunting activities. Bayfield's elevation is 6,900 feet, which contributes to its well-defined seasons.

Bayfield is like living in the center of all that matters. There are mountains on two sides and spectacular desert landscapes on the other two. Vallecito Lake is just ten miles to the north and Navajo Lake is about 18 miles to the southeast.
