Consumer Advisory: Life Insurance Policy Locator finds $8.3M for Coloradans

Lost life insurance policies and annuities are surprisingly common.

DENVER (March 6, 2019) – Recognizing this week as National Consumer Protection Week, the Colorado Division of Insurance, part of the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), is reminding people about the Life Insurance Policy Locator. For people who think their loved one had a life insurance policy or annuity, but who do not have the details, this tool allows them to not only search for the information, but make sure beneficiaries receive the payments from those policies.

Since it launched in November 2016, the Life Insurance Policy Locator has matched 515 Coloradans with lost or misplaced life insurance policies or annuities, leading to $8,339,656 returned to those beneficiaries. Nationwide, the Locator has matched 28,791 people with $446,054,729.

Many people who have lost a loved one have a vague recollection of a life insurance policy, or they find an old scrap of paper with faded writing from parents or grandparents.

“These lost policies represent wishes that have gone unfulfilled,” said Insurance Commissioner Michael Conway. “People don’t talk much about their life insurance, so lost policies are fairly common. I encourage anyone in this situation to use the locator to find the details and get it figured out.”

Using the Life Insurance Policy Locator, consumer requests are encrypted and secured to maintain confidentiality. Participating insurers compare submitted requests with available policyholder information and report all matches to state insurance departments through the locator. Companies then contact beneficiaries or their authorized representatives. Insurance companies have 90 days to research inquiries.

The Locator was developed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) after regulators across the country recognized that lost life insurance policies were a growing problem.
