La Puente Home

Agency: La Puente Home, Inc.

Areas Served: The six counties of the San Luis Valley: Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, Saguache

Program Description: La Puente endeavors to meet immediate needs and empower people to live independently with dignity. Located in a very rural and isolated area, La Puente serves the entire San Luis Valley, a geographical area larger than the state of Massachusetts, and with a poverty rate of over 25%. AmeriCorps members serve in one or two charities that serve the homeless, the hungry and people living in poverty. These include: an emergency shelter, a homeless prevention program, a transitional housing program for families, a program for homeless abused or neglected children, a network of 13 food banks, and a garden science and nutrition education program. AmeriCorps members also coordinate volunteers and promote education and awareness, promoting the participation of the local community in meeting the needs of those around them, and expanding the capacity of the organization to serve more clients. AmeriCorps members live together in a community of 23 service members in one of five houses, and spend the year committed to the values of the service program: service, simple living, and social justice. Members provide a range of services including case management for the homeless and those on the verge of homelessness, emergency food assistance, and volunteer recruitment and coordination. Typically members are post college and range in age from 22-mid 30's.

Program Impact:

  • More than 11,000 individuals receive emergency food services each year, roughly 25% of the SLV population
  • Over 700 individuals receive emergency shelter each year
  • AmeriCorps members organized and served in 2 national days of service
