City Year Denver

Agency: City Year Denver

Areas Served: Denver

Program Description: City Year deploys diverse teams of 8 to 20 AmeriCorps members (ages 18 to 25) to serve full time in schools to partner with teachers and principals to accelerate student and school success. AmeriCorps members are integrated into the fabric of the school community and provide research-based individual  student, classroom and school-wide supports to accelerate students’ social-emotional and academic growth. City Year employs an asset-based youth development approach, which leverages students’ strengths to more deeply engage them in their own learning, build their confidence and agency, and help them succeed. As near-peer mentors, City Year AmeriCorps members are young enough to relate to students, but old enough to provide students with valuable guidance.  Currently City Year partners with 9 Denver Public Schools.

Program Impact:

  • 88% of City Year Denver partner schools improved their rating from 2014 to 2016 according to School Performance Framework (SPF) data provided by DPS.
  • 98% of teachers agree or strongly agree that corps members foster a positive learning environment.
  • 89% of teachers agree or strongly agree that corps members improve student’s motivation to learn.
