Annual Fishing Derby

Each year the District hosts a free Fishing Derby the first weekend of June, coinciding with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Free Fishing Days. The Fishing Derby is a 2-day event with a Youth (15 years and under) Derby on Saturday and an Individual or Team Derby taking place Saturday and Sunday. The event encourages, spotlights, and educates about outdoor water-related recreation opportunities in Western Rio Blanco County. Typical prize categories include longest fish, shortest fish, longest trout, longest crappie, heaviest stringer, and overall derby longest fish with multiple age groups. As an added feature to the Colorado Free Fishing weekend and Fishing Derby, the RBWCD also has a NO FEE weekend for boating and camping which is extremely popular. As the RWBCD is an area with threatened and endangered fish species, before the derby all entrants participate in a short 15-minute educational session by the CPW highlighting these endangered fishes.

All Colorado Parks and Wildlife laws and limits are strictly enforced. For additional information on Colorado fishing laws please visit the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website or contact the local CPW office.
