Health First Colorado Members Begin Receiving IRS 1095-B Forms

Forms Provide Proof of Health Insurance in 2016

Denver, CO - Today the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (Department) began sending Health First Colorado (Colorado’s Medicaid program) members IRS Tax Form 1095-B as proof of health insurance for the 2016 tax year. IRS Tax Form 1095-B is a federal tax document that includes information about the months during 2016 in which Health First Colorado members, and others in their household, were enrolled in qualifying health coverage as required under the Affordable Care Act.

This is the second year Colorado has sent the form to nearly everyone enrolled in Health First Colorado, and all those enrolled in Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+). Health First Colorado and CHP+ enrollees are not required to include the 1095-B form with their tax return, but they should keep it with their tax records to verify coverage.

“The ACA is still current law and it requires most people to have proof of qualifying health care coverage in 2016,” said Susan E. Birch, MBA, BSN, RN, executive director of the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing. “The 1095-B form provides our members verification, should the IRS request it.”

Health First Colorado has posted a set of frequently asked questions regarding the 1095-B Form. The questions and answers explain who should expect to receive the forms, how they can be used, and how to file a 2016 tax return with or without the forms.
