Park and Rec Month Activities

Park and Recreation Month is down to its last few days but there are still plenty of fun activities on the calendar. Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD) wants you to keep getting outdoors to discover the power of play at your local parks and recreation facilities.

An initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), Park and Recreation Month has been celebrated since 1985 to highlight the vital and powerful role local parks and recreation, such as EVRPD, play in conservation, health and wellness, and community involvement.

For the last few days of July, EVRPD recommends these fun indoor and outdoor activities, with a highlight of the announcement of the Park and Recreation Month photo contest winner:
-    Take the kids to Stanley Park: For Friday, July 26, we recommend heading to Stanley Park with the family where the kids can play on the playground, fly a kite or toss a baseball. Free. Park is open sunrise to sunset.
-    Hike the East Portal Trail. On Saturday, July 27, take a hike into Rocky Mountain National Park. The East Portal Trail, which starts at the end of Highway 66 about one and a half miles past the YMCA of the Rockies, climbs around Emerald Mountain into the park and continues up to Sprague Lake. It is a great option to avoid the traffic on Bear Lake Road. A park pass is required to use this trail. Limited parking is available at the trailhead.
-    Weekly photo contest: Sunday, July 28, marks the beginning of the last few days to enter the Park and Recreation Month photo contest. Submit your photo from any of the previous themes—wildlife of Estes Park, Recreation in Estes Park, or Family Fun in Estes Park—on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/evrpd). Include #PlayOnEstesPark in the post to be included in the contest. Visit www.evrpd.com/parkandrecmonth for complete rules, prizes and details.
-    Play Wii Bowling. On Monday, July 29, come by the Estes Valley Community Center at 10 a.m. to join in on a fun and free game of Wii Bowling. We’ll set up the game, you set up for fun. Free to participate.
-    Complete the fitness circuit. Take a run or walk around Lake Estes and complete the various fitness stations along the way for this Tuesday, July 30 activity. Free.
-    Take a dip. On Wednesday, July 31, take a dip in the leisure pool, float through the lazy river or take a spin down the slide at the Estes Valley Community Center. You are only a ride away by taking the silver line shuttle bus. Please remember to bring your own towel. Daily admission rates apply.
