Animal Welfare Section - Racing

Animal Welfare Section

The Animal Welfare Section has the responsibility of protecting the health and safety of greyhounds and horses racing in Colorado. The section consists of veterinarians and veterinarian technicians hired by the Division to be present during live racing events. Staff conducts physical examinations of animals and takes blood and urine samples to test for the presence of prohibited drugs or medication. Animals not in proper physical condition are prohibited from racing. Necessary action is taken to ensure the health and safety of racing animals and the fairness of races. Monitoring track conditions and injury patterns are mandated in order to provide periodic updates to the Commission. This section also inspects kennels and stables to protect the health and well-being of racing animals.
