DORA participates in SmartCheck Week April 11 - 17, 2016
DENVER (April 12, 2016) -- Consumers should make it an annual habit to check the background of their financial professionals. To encourage this habit, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) launched SmartCheck Week, April 11 - 17, 2016, an effort to have consumers check the background of their financial professional at least once a year.
In that same spirit, the Securities, Insurance, and Real Estate divisions of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) are doing their part to help increase awareness about this small but important step as part of DORA’s statewide “Take 5 to Get Wise” campaign and Financial Literacy Month activities.
Here are some of the types of state-licensed professionals or organizations that might help you with financial matters.
- Broker-dealer sales representatives
- Investment adviser representatives
- Insurance agents
- Mortgage broker-dealers
- Mortgage loan originators
- Title insurance agents
"We encourage consumers to take five minutes for their financial health," commented DORA Executive Director Joe Neguse. "Through a quick online check, you may discover new information about the background of your financial professional."
"Why should you regularly check the background of the financial professionals who are working on your behalf? Because, a lot happens in a year. Much like checking the batteries in your smoke alarm on a yearly basis, we are encouraging everyone to ensure your existing financial professional is registered and his or her license is up to date, and familiarize yourself with any disciplinary actions that might be on their record,” said Colorado Securities Commissioner Gerald Rome. “These steps are important to ensure that your finances are safe and sound.”
