Colorado Division of Insurance website ranked #3 as most helpful in nation

Analysis from Nerdwallet finds site and consumer assistance resources easy to use.

DENVER (September 30, 2016) – In a recently released report, Nerdwallet, a consumer financial assistance site, ranked the website for the Colorado Division of Insurance (DOI) (dora.colorado.gov/insurance) as the third most helpful state insurance site in the nation.

In its report “State insurance websites ranked from most to least helpful to consumers,” NerdWallet scoured 51 websites (which included the District of Columbia) looking for information that would be the most helpful to consumers. They also called the associated consumer help-lines and emailed each insurance department/division, then graded each agency on over 20 factors. They analyzed four areas of the site.

  • Insurance rate comparisons
  • Complaint data
  • Consumer assistance
  • Consumer education and resources

Nerdwallet stated that the Colorado DOI website performed well due to the ease in locating and using the premium comparison tool, its comprehensive complaint reports and the availability of consumer education resources.

“This makes my day,” said Insurance Commissioner Marguerite Salazar.  “I always tell people that the DOI is a consumer resource -- a place to go and get answers to their insurance questions.  This report tells me we are making it easier for people to use the DOI and get the important information they need to make informed decisions.”

While the DOI, part of the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), regulates the insurance industry in Colorado -- both insurance companies and insurance agents -- it is also a consumer protection agency.  The DOI works with consumers to answer questions, about 15,000 per year, and investigate formal complaints, about 4,000 annually.  The DOI will act on behalf of consumers when insurance companies are not following the law or are not providing the benefits paid for by consumers.

Colorado consumers with insurance questions can visit the DOI website -dora.colorado.gov/insurance - or call 303-894-7490 or 800-930-3745 (outside the Denver metro area).
