Insurance Commissioner Salazar appointed to federal advisory committee
DENVER (Oct. 28, 2015) – The U.S. Department of the Treasury recently announced the appointment of Colorado’s Commissioner of Insurance, Marguerite Salazar, to the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance (FACI). Commissioner Salazar oversees the Colorado Division of Insurance (DOI), which is part of the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).
The FACI is a group of representatives from the insurance and reinsurance industry, academics and state regulators that offers advice and recommendations directly to the Federal Insurance Office (FIO). Members serve terms up to three years. The Commissioner was one of 12 appointments to the committee.
“This prestigious appointment is a well-deserved recognition of Commissioner Salazar’s innovative work and achievements in the regulation of insurance,” said DORA Executive Director Joe Neguse. “Having one of our own as part of the team making recommendations on insurance to the federal government gives Coloradans a seat at an important table.”
Commissioner Salazar is one of six state insurance commissioners appointed to the group.
Earlier this year, she was also named the 2015 Chair of the Consumer Liaison Committee of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). The NAIC is the U.S. standard-setting and regulatory support organization created and governed by the chief insurance regulators from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories.
Marguerite Salazar was appointed by Governor John Hickenlooper as Colorado Insurance Commissioner effective August 19, 2013. As Commissioner, she is also the chief executive of the Division of Insurance, part of the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). Before she became Commissioner, Salazar was the Regional Director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Region VIII, as appointed by President Barack Obama. Prior to that appointment, she served over 20 years as President/CEO of Valley-Wide Health Systems, a large, rural Community Health Center covering 22 counties in Southern Colorado and serving over 40,000 patients through 26 primary health care clinics.
