DORA Executive Director Joe Neguse appoints Aubrey L. Elenis as Director of Colorado’s Division of Civil Rights

DENVER (June 17, 2016) -- Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Executive Director Joe Neguse announced today that Aubrey L. Elenis, Esq. will join the Department as Director of the Colorado Civil Rights Division (CCRD). The CCRD is charged with enforcing the State of Colorado’s anti-discriminaelenis.jpgation laws in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodations. The CCRD promotes and protects civil rights throughout the State, and works to eliminate and prevent discrimination through investigation, education, mediation and enforcement.

As a former CCRD investigator, prominent Colorado attorney, and active member of the community, Elenis is a passionate defender of civil rights. She starts in her new role effective June 27, 2016.

“Elenis’s broad background as both a successful business attorney and former investigator with the Division of Civil Rights gives her a unique perspective to effectively lead the Division and enforce Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act for the benefit of all Coloradans,” said Executive Director Neguse. “She has consistently demonstrated a passion for public service and a commitment to protecting our fellow citizens from unlawful discrimination.”

In her current position as an associate attorney at Gordon & Rees, LLP, Elenis counsels and defends clients against claims of employment discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, harassment, breach of contract, and other labor and employment disputes. Prior to joining Gordon & Rees, Elenis worked at the Colorado Civil Rights Division as an Investigator, and later, as the Division’s Alternative Dispute Resolution & Outreach Supervisor. During her time at the Division, she conducted numerous investigations into high-profile allegations of housing and employment discrimination, while also supervising and facilitating mediations and conciliations for the Division and providing Equal Employment training sessions throughout the State.

“Civil rights work is a life-long passion of mine, and my time as an investigator with the CCRD was an invaluable and defining aspect of my career,” said Elenis. “That is why I am so excited to return to the Division, and deeply honored to serve as its Director.”

Elenis is a graduate of the Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver.

Neguse also expressed appreciation and thanks to CCRD Deputy Director Jennifer McPherson, who has served as acting director during the search, and who will return to that position.
