Las Animas, CO – Tuesday, August 4, 2015 –  Today the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) in collaboration with Outside the Wire, a social impact company, presented a performance of Philoctetes at The Fort Lyon Supportive Residential Community in Bent County.

Theater of War: is an innovative public health project that presents readings of ancient Greek plays—Sophocles Ajax and Philoctetes—as a catalyst for facilitated audience discussions about visible and invisible wounds. Using Sophocles’ plays to forge a common vocabulary for openly discussing the impact of trauma, isolation, chronic illness, and substance abuse upon individuals, families, and communities, these events are aimed at fostering understanding, connection, and compassion, as well as health-seeking behavior.

The 2 hour-long presentation featured Jay O Sanders: The Day After Tomorrow, The Green Lantern, JFK, and Jim Hunt: Hysteria, Charles Ives Take Me Home, And the Sun Stood Still. The readings from the play were followed by discussion with panelists from the local community and a facilitated town-hall style audience discussion.
