Overview

The Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) invite you to a one-day workshop on implementing land use solutions that reduce the impacts of hazards in your  community.

The workshop will guide participants through developing and adopting mitigation actions. There will be a focus on updating land use and development codes to reduce the impact of natural disasters, and creating incentive programs to promote development in safer areas. Utilizing the Planning for Hazards:
Land Use Solutions guide (www.planningforhazards.com) and supplemental materials, the workshop will draw on lessons from to communities that have successfully implemented a variety of tools and strategies.

Workshop Goal: Communities that participate will be able to implement their identified land use mitigation action(s) within one year of attending the workshop.

Audience

This workshop is free of charge to accepted communities and is an ideal opportunity for:
• Jurisdictions that are currently, or will soon be, updating their Comprehensive Land Use/Development/Building and Zoning Codes and Policies
• Counties that have recently completed the process of updating their FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plan and would like to develop specific land use tools to achieve their mitigation goals
• Municipalities that would like to minimize the level of damage caused by hazards such as wildfires, geologic concerns, or floods by making updates to their development and redevelopment standards

A one-day workshop in Summer 2018

Location

The location is to be determined, but it will be centrally located for participating communities.
