Lakewood, CO-  The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control’s (DFPC) Mobile Live Fire Training Unit (MLFTU) is stationed in Grand Junction all week, and it’s helping firefighters around the area practice their skills.

Many larger metropolitan cities have these types of facilities available to them but there are very few organizations in rural Colorado that have this type of resource available. The 53-foot trailer is used to simulate different training scenarios for firefighters. It can produce smoke and flames and is controlled by an instructor.

On Wednesday, August 21- DFPC will have a dedication ceremony of the West Slope Based training unit to DFPC's first director, Dean Smith.

"During the early years, Director Dean Smith would administer Firefighter Certification exams all around the state and then bring the exams home where he and his wife Joyce would hand grade the exams at the kitchen table and generate certificates," said DFPC Director Mike Morgan. "This dedication is well deserved- we wouldn't be here today without him."
