Extension of Rules for Certification Requirements and Certification Renewals

11.19.2020 In response to COVID-19 written exam closures, and in-person training sessions being cancelled, DFPC has made two important modifications to the current rules requirements for initial certification and renewal of Firefighter and Hazardous Materials Responders Certifications.

1. Certification applicants who are unable to complete the required certification testing components within the required 12 month period due to suspension of testing may request an extension.   An extension request for completion of certification components should be submitted by the candidate's Training Officer and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

2. Extension of the current renewal requirements for certifications expiring on January 1, 2021 to allow for 90-day extension for the completion of renewal requirements until March 31, 2021. Training officers will be able to renew eligible certifications that have a January 1, 2021 expiration date in the RMS from October 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021.

Information is subject to change as the Division of Fire Prevention and Control continues to monitor the issues as they impact agencies and first responders.
