Apprenticeship Experiences: Heavy Equipment Operator Training

Nov. 21, 2018 - On Saturday Nov. 17, CWDC staff attended an informational session about the apprenticeship program at Local 9’s Heavy Equipment Operator Training School, one of the International Union of Operating Engineers’ local training centers. The information session was led by Local 9 Program Administrator Garry Edmondson.

Local 9's Heavy Equipment Operator Training school is located 35 miles east of Denver on 160 acres, which includes a shop and a classroom. They have three full-time instructors and one secretary to take care of 170 apprentices located throughout Colorado. All Local 9 members and apprentices have access to a wide variety of equipment for apprentice and upgrade skill training.

The CWDC staff members and other partners who attended the information session, including Tami Grant (Division Head, Employment Services of Weld County) and Lisa Taylor (Executive Director, Immigrant Refugee Center of Northern Colorado), also had the opportunity to operate some of the heavy equipment. With this hands-on learning, in addition to receiving details about the training school, the whole experience was an engaging and educational look into some of the exciting opportunities afforded to apprentices in Colorado. Thank you to Garry and Local 9 for the great experience!
