Trooper S. Marty Smith

On October 22, 2004 the Craig Police Department responded to a “shots fired” call within city limits. Trooper Smith and other law enforcement officers were looking for a reported red Ford Bronco fleeing the scene of a fatal shooting in Craig, Colorado. However, due to varied witness accounts, the vehicle officers were seeking turned out to be a red Chevrolet pickup. Trooper Smith, playing on a hunch pulled over a red Chevrolet pickup for defective taillights, a stop that produced the suspect of the shooting and two firearms. This contact happened within 10 minutes of the Colorado State Patrol Craig Communications Center receiving the 911 phone call. As a result of finding the 17 year- old suspect and evidence so quickly after the crime, the prosecution of the suspect and his accomplices should be less complicated.
