October Spotlight

Hello and welcome back to another edition of the City Spotlight! We believe one of the great advantages of small town living is getting to know our neighbors and folks in the community. We’re happy for the opportunity to help you get to know our employees by sharing their stories. This week, we shine the Spotlight on a twenty-one year veteran of the City of Yuma, Mr. Zane McMeekin.

Zane’s journey to the City of Yuma began nearby, as he grew up between Yuma and Otis. After graduating from Otis High School in 1982, Zane headed to Goodland, KS to pursue a degree in drafting. After earning that degree, a promising career in the field of design and engineering began.

Zane moved to Denver, and worked for several engineering firms during an exciting time. He was there for the drawing and expansion of Highlands Ranch, the early days of the 16th Street Mall, and other prominent businesses in downtown Denver. In the end, however, this career was not meant to be, as every firm he worked for ultimately closed its doors.

That stretch of tough luck took Zane back to Kansas, where his career in Public Works began, with the City of Dodge City. The City proved to be a good fit for Zane, as he ascended to the level of supervisor at the City’s Events Center. But life in Dodge City wasn’t for him, and Zane decided it was time to return to Yuma, and be closer to his family.

In the spring of 1998, Zane was hired by the City of Yuma Streets Department and has been a loyal employee ever since. He knows the streets of Yuma as well as anyone after all the years he’s spent maintaining them. Today, Zane serves as the Streets Department foreman, overseeing daily operations ranging from street sweeping to gravel road maintenance, and asphalt repair.

After spending his younger years moving around and living in big cities, Zane is a Yuma resident through and through. He’s the proud father of two kids (ages 16 and 13), who are both students at Lone Star School. The City of Yuma appreciates the years of hard work and service Zane has given our community!
