EMS Provider certification exceptions due to COVID-19

Extension for renewal of EMS provider certification

Exception has been made for current Colorado EMS providers that cannot obtain their BLS card, ACLS card, continuing education verification and/or skills attesttation due to COVID-19 distancing requirements. Renewal applicants who cannot meet these requirements can forego them by following the instructions below. To be eligible, your certification must have expired after March 25, 2020 or is due to expire before April 24, 2020. The department will extend your certification period to April 24, 2020. 

Steps to bypass required attachments:

  1. Login to your OATH account to find the "Applications" tab.
  2. Start or continue the "EMS Provider Certification – Renewal" application. All required information must be completed.
  3. Navigate to the "CPR/ACLS..." tab in the application. This tab will require you to upload a BLS and/or ACLS card. 
  4. Select 'Exemption requested (reinstatement provisionals only)' in the CPR or ACLS "Organization" drop down. Enter today's date in the "Expiration Date" field.
  5. Continue on to complete all other application tabs and submit the application.

If requesting exception to education verification requirements, you should select your education program as instructed in the application. These exceptions will satisfy the missing requirements and the department will extend your certification period to April 24, 2020 upon successful completion of all other application requirements.

 

EMS Provider certification provisional reinstatement

Exception has been made for Colorado EMS providers whose certification has expired more than 6 months ago and wish to reinstate certification without a valid NREMT number. A 90 day provisional certification will be issued to applicants who complete the steps below. Previous Colorado EMS providers whose certification has expired after April 1, 2014 are eligible for this provisional reinstatement. This is a two-step process that consists of: submitting a  reinstatement application, then submitting an application for provisional certification.

Steps to a provisional reinstatement

  1. Login to your OATH account to find the "Applications" tab.
  2. Start the "EMS Provider Certification – Reinstatement" application. All required information must be completed.
  3. Answer 'Yes' to the question: "Are you requesting a 90 day provisional reinstatement?"
  4. Provide a NREMT number. Your previous number may be pre-populated in this field. If not, please enter the dummy number of "99999999".
  5. Navigate to the "CPR/ACLS..." tab in the application. This tab will require you to upload a BLS and/or ACLS card. 
  6. Select 'Exemption requested (reinstatement provisionals only)' in the CPR or ACLS "Organization" drop down. Enter today's date in the "Expiration Date" field.
  7. Continue on to complete all other application tabs.
  8. Sign and submit the reinstatement application for review. A provisional request will be made available in your OATH account after submission. 
  9. Find and start the "Provisional Request" form in on your OATH account by clicking 'Applications'>'Continue'.

The required $23 provisional fee has been waived. If you haven't lived outside of Colorado for the past 3 years, you won't be required to provide a name-based criminal record check. Once approved, your provisional reinstatement will be valid for 90 days. To apply for a full three year reinstatement of your certification, you will need to meet ALL of the requirements for initial certification. Reinstatement for EMT-Intermediates is available on a provisional basis only.
