Walking Mountains Science Center’s mission is to awaken a sense of wonder and inspire environmental stewardship and sustainability through natural science education. Walking Mountains’ LEED Platinum environmental learning center is a sustainability education resource for residents and visitors in the Vail Valley.

  • Each year we educate over 30,000 youth and adults through a variety of programs in K-12 schools and in the community at large, including over 30 zero waste events. This calendar year, over 127,000 people were reached by Walking Mountains Science Center’s operations.
  • We have trained over 200 local businesses and certified 57 in sustainability best practices since 2015.
  • Our Energy Smart program has reduced community CO2 emissions by 4,977 metric tons each year.
  • Through our onsite solar energy systems, we produced 121,118 KWh of electricity in 2017.
  • Our campus has been certified as LEED Platinum since February 2013.
  • Our staff spent 6,798 hours out in nature leading participants on hikes, snowshoes, or other programming
  • 29,564 pounds of waste were diverted from the landfill (into recycling and compost) as a result of the zero waste events we staffed throughout 2017.
