IBM is committed to environmental leadership in all of its business activities, from its operations to the design of its products and use of its technology. IBM's corporate policy on environmental affairs, first issued in 1971, is supported by the company's global environmental management system, which is the key element of the company's efforts to achieve results consistent with environmental leadership and ensures the company is vigilant in protecting the environment across all of its operations worldwide.

IBM Boulder is IBM's largest global data center site and home to a LEED silver certified data center. In 2017, IBM Boulder made even greater progress in its ongoing pursuit of environmental excellence and corporate stewardship by maintaining ISO 14001:2015 EMS certification, as well as ISO 50001 EnMP certification. This included:

  • Purchased 100% recycled paper
  • Purchased 1,000,000 kWh of wind energy (Wind Source)
  • Recycled, reused and composted 70% of non-hazardous waste generated
  • Since 2004, collected and recycled over 33 tons of used computers from employees
  • In the process of finalizing 50 acres of solar panels at the IBM Boulder campus
  • Numerous energy and water use reduction projects
