Quality Improvement (QI) is a formal approach for analyzing the performance of a process and the efforts to improve the resulting process outcomes. Quality Improvement is part of the Performance Improvement Framework as presented in the following graphic from the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO).
According to the International Society for Performance Improvement, performance improvement is a framework which assesses and measures the current level of performance and generates ideas and plans for changing organizational behavior and infrastructure in order to achieve improvement.
Performance improvement, or performance management, in public health includes assessments such as the Community Health Assessment, planning which results in plans such as the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), Strategic Plan, and QI Plan, and improving such as the type of improvement that occur with formal QI projects.
