Southeast Workforce Center Offers Career Fair For Students on March 13

Event at Inspiration Field will focus on career exploration in eight diverse industries

(La Junta) -- On Friday, March 13, the Southeast Workforce Center will hold a Youth Career Fair at Inspiration Field, 612 Adams Avenue in La Junta from 8:30 am to 4 pm.

The event is anticipated to draw hundreds of young adults between the ages of 14-21 to learn about eight key industries with strong growth potential.  Industries represented at the fair will include Health Care, Early Childhood Education, Finance, Hospitality, Construction, Law Enforcement, Corrections and Manufacturing.  Local employers representing each industry will make presentations and meet with young people to answer questions.
This special event provides youth a chance to start thinking about the “big picture,” where high school and college students want to be in the years ahead.  “They need to begin plotting out a course, considering their career interests and the strengths and skills they will need to make that career a reality,” says Workforce Center Director Betty Velasquez.
“Participating employers will talk with young people about the education and background requirements for various careers.  With careful preparation, this event can help connect them with their future.”
More than two centuries ago, Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark embarked on a journey to explore the uncharted West.  A vast unexplored America stretched before them.  They had a general sense of direction but very little idea of what to expect as they forged ahead, off the map.

For thousands of Colorado’s young people, entering “real world” fresh out of school can feel like they’ve just stepped right off the map.  It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the prospect of entering the next chapter in their lives.  That’s life off the map, a life that young people in Southeast Colorado will be better prepared for through the career exploration available on March 13.
School districts within the 8 county region have been contacted and invited to the career fair so space will be limited.  Attending the event requires pre-registration which closes on Friday, February 27.  For more information or to register, please contact the Southeast Workforce Center in La Junta or by phone at 719-383-3191.
