Governor Hickenlooper Declares November "Hire a Veteran First" Month

(DENVER)  Governor Hickenlooper has issued a proclamation declaring November “Hire A Veteran First” Month.  The proclamation reads in part:

Whenever called upon to defend our nation’s security at home or abroad, the men and women who serve in the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserves have responded immediately, placing national interests above their own.

Veterans bring a sense of leadership, learned through the challenges and demands they faced in military service.  They have an ability to adapt and learn quickly and they bring the right mind-set, a good attitude, team spirit and those personal attributes that all businesses are looking for.  We honor these military veterans and acknowledge their importance to our economic future.

“Colorado businesses are looking for the best employees and veterans are ideal candidates,” says Ellen Golombek, Executive Director of the Department of Labor and Employment.  “The challenge is connecting veterans with employers and Workforce Centers have a history of making that connection.  More than 40 Local Veteran Employment Representatives and Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialists are in state and county run Workforce Centers across Colorado, ready to provide assistance.  Our approach is veterans helping veterans.”

These Veterans Employment Specialists provide assistance to veterans in finding employment, acquiring skills and planning for the future.  Each year, these specialists  – who are themselves veterans –assist veterans, offering a full spectrum of services.  So far this year, 28,657 have received services through their local Workforce Center.

“Employers who hire veterans will tell you they have made a real investment in their business with each hire,” says Department of Labor and Employment Executive Director Ellen

Golombek.  “Whether our services are delivered face-to-face or online, we are proud of our long-standing commitment to the men and women of the Armed Forces.  Our approach is veterans helping veterans.”

Employers interested in learning more about hiring veterans and what these job candidates can contribute to a business should visit their nearest Workforce Center or go to for more information.
