You have navigated through the application process and have been selected for an interview. Here are some tips for a successful interview.
There are many types of interviews including in-person, video, telephone, informal, panel, group, etc; all of these may present their own sets of challenges. The key is to be prepared. Bring copies of your resume, portfolio, business cards, and be on time. It is helpful to research the company and know about the needs of the business in advance. This goes a long way on making an initial impression. Also, go through some possible questions and complete some mock-interviews in advance, especially if it has been a while since your last interview.
Dress for the position. Be sure to have your interview clothes ready to go so you aren’t scrambling the day of your interview. Dress conservatively and comfortably and be clean and neat. Avoid applying heavy make-up, wearing excessive jewelry or trendy or flashy clothing.
It is important to plan to arrive early. Know how to get there, where to park, and how much time is needed to allow for traffic.
You are making a first impression during your interview, so be courteous and turn off your cell phone. Offer a firm handshake and sit down only after being offered a chair. Be aware of your body language, so try not to fidget and make sure you are engaged in the conversation. One way to do this is to lean forward slightly and make eye contact. Most importantly, be enthusiastic and make sure you aren’t negative about anything. Maintaining a positive attitude throughout is a great way to sell yourself!
This is your opportunity to make an impression. Be sure to follow-up with a thank you note or email. Even if you are not selected as a candidate, an employer may have another position that comes up. A thank you note goes a long way to making you stand out.
