Behavioral Health Cultural Competence | CLAS Standards Policies and Procedures

The Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) has enacted the creation of seven policies reflective of the National CLAS (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services) Standards. The policies are designed to provide behavioral health agencies with guidance and direction in implementing the National CLAS Standards into their daily practices. The policies outline ways in which OBH, OBH’s contracted, designated and licensed behavioral health service providers and the two state mental health institutes can effectively provide culturally informed, inclusive and responsive services and treatment. These seven policies are in compliance with the Volume 21 Behavioral Health Treatment Rules, section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act; and the Enhanced National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards, put forth by the Office of Minority Health.

The National Standards for CLAS in Health and Health Care (The National CLAS Standards) mandates, guidelines, and recommendations issued by the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health aim to improve health care quality and advance health equity. By establishing a framework for organizations to serve the nation's increasingly diverse communities; thereby, improving the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs that will help eliminate disparities.
