Governor Hickenlooper Appoints DYC Leader to Colorado Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Council
Al Estrada, CDHS Division of Youth Corrections Associate Director, was appointed by Governor Hickenlooper to the Colorado Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Council. The Council provides statewide leadership and advocacy to improve the juvenile justice system, prevent delinquency, ensure equal justice and accountability for all youth while maximizing community safety.
The JJDP Council has been a leader on compliance and regulatory reform in major areas including sight and sound separation and the definition of detention for compliance purposes. Based largely on this Council's research and advocacy, the Colorado Office of Adult and Juvenile Justice Assistance changed the manner in which they enforce certain regulations to ensure they better reflect best-practice. The JJDP Council also lead the charge to amend the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act to ensure that Native Americans were subject to the same protection afforded to those in state justice systems.
Members of this influential group have also greatly impacted policy and practice on a national level by sitting on federal boards and national committees including the Federal Juvenile Justice Advisory Council to the President of the United States, and the National Coalition for Juvenile Justice and Western Coalition of Juvenile Justice.
