DYS Expands Family Support Groups

This past week the Division was excited to hold its first Family Support Group in Colorado Springs. The group is designed for the families of youth committed to the Division of Youth Services and is facilitated by Julie DeNicola of Stepping Stones Advocacy. Four families attended the inaugural meeting with a focus of self-care. During the meeting, attendees not only received self-care ideas including exercises, everyone received a bag of self-care items including a mug, hot chocolate, tea, coloring pages with crayons and lotion. The families ended the meeting discussing topics they would like to discuss at their next meeting in November.

The Division is excited to further expand services to families of the youth in their care. One parent summed up the family support group perfectly when they said, “This is so nice to have a place to talk with people going through the same things as me, without any judgement or fear of judgements.”
