Arrest Made in Aguilar Homicide
05/24/2018— An arrest has been made in a homicide that occurred near the town of Aguilar on May 9, 2018.
On May 23, 2018, Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office (LASO) deputies and officers with the Trinidad Police Department (TPD) arrested Domenic Damelio, (age 20), of Trinidad, on a warrant for murder in the first degree, murder in the second degree, and first-degree kidnapping. The arrest is in connection with the death of Burchard Mitchell (age 39), who was found deceased off a county road two miles west of Aguilar on May 9.
Damelio was arrested at a home in the 100 block of Burlington Street in Trinidad, Colorado, following a brief standoff with LASO deputies and TPD officers. Damelio was transported to the Las Animas County Jail where he is being held without bond.
The LASO and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation continue to investigate the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the homicide of Mitchell.
