The Appeals Section works with individuals who are denied the ability to purchase a firearm and appeal to the CBI for reconsideration. Upon receiving the person's intention to appeal within 30 days of being denied, will review the denial, conduct any necessary research and return a final determination within 30 days. In many cases, the Appeals section is able to overturn a denial based on additional information provided by the appellant or obtained by the CBI as a result of the appeals process.
On many occasions, the Appeals section has been able to work with the appellant to correct or update erroneous or missing information from the record. This may not only result in an overturned denial, but also assist in the correction of erroneous information which could otherwise have a negative impact on things such as professional licensing, housing, and employment.
If you have been denied by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for the purchase of a firearm, you have the right to appeal the decision. In accordance with both state and federal privacy laws, we are unable to disclose the reason(s) for your denial over the telephone, nor do we handle appeals in person. In order to appeal, you MUST submit your intent to appeal in writing within 30 days of your denial. If not provided by the FFL at the time of denied firearm purchase, please use the form below:
