What is Wildland Urban Interface
A "Wildland Interface" is where urban firefighting meets wildland firefighting. Structures at the edges of wildlands are threatened and require skills and equipment of both disciplines.
Wildland response and operations cover approximately 86% of the 125 square miles of the Cañon City Fire District. The fuels are typically a Pinion/Juniper mix with low undergrowth grasses.
As a national trend, homes and sub-divisions are being constructed within this fuel environment and add to the complexity of fire suppression. Fire danger in these areas is moderate due to fuel arrangement.
