  • Flowers are yellow, 0.5 in wide with 5 petals and distinct orange margins along the edges of the sepals, occurring in clusters at the top of the plant
  • Leaves are lanceolate in shape, 8-12 cm long, opposite or whorled, are dotted with black or orange glands, and have soft hairs beneath
  • Stem are branched with soft hairs
  • Stolon-like rhizomes can reach 30 feet
  • Fruit is a dry capsule
  • Reproduces by seed (thought to be water-dispersed) and rhizomes
  • Grows in wetlands, wet woods, and along lakeshores and riverbanks
