Rabies is caused by the rabies virus, an enveloped, bullet-shaped virus containing a single stranded, negative sense RNA molecule. There are over 4,000 mammalian species which are susceptible to rabies, although only a few of these species are considered major reservoir hosts. Worldwide, the primary reservoirs are carnivores and bats.
