DENVER — Monday, July 31, 2017 — Gov. John Hickenlooper and Jake Steinfeld, Chairman of the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils, announced today that three Colorado schools have been selected to receive a Don’t Quit! Fitness Center. Winners include Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy in Colorado Springs, Centennial Middle School in Montrose and Everitt Middle School in Wheat Ridge. These schools demonstrated outstanding leadership in getting and keeping their students fit.

“Physical activity is part of our health and happiness,” said Governor John Hickenlooper. “These types of partnerships help us advance our commitment to make our state the healthiest in the nation. Congratulations Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy, Centennial Middle School and Everitt Middle School for winning a new fitness center! We are sure you will put the equipment to great use.”

State agencies, including the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Governor’s Council for Active and Healthy Lifestyles are working with organizations across Colorado to promote, train, and support comprehensive school health and wellness. Gov. Hickenlooper has also focused on initiatives promoting physical fitness for kids and all Coloradans, including increasing access to parks and trails.Whether it is in schools, parks, or trails, the state is working to ensure access to physical activity is easy, affordable and part of the daily lives of Coloradans.

The National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils program will make its way into all 50 states in the coming years. TuffStuff Fitness International provides all of the fitness equipment, which is manufactured right here in the United States.

“When I declared war on childhood obesity, I knew it would take an army of leaders to make a difference. I was thrilled when Governor Hickenlooper joined our efforts to help put a stop to this disease in Colorado,” said Jake "Body by Jake" Steinfeld. “The National Foundation is really excited to award three Colorado schools with new fitness centers that will have a lasting impact on kids and their community now, and well into their future!”

These state-of-the-art Don’t Quit! Fitness Centers will be unveiled during ribbon cutting ceremonies in October.
