Florence, Colorado... "A Great Little Town!"

Zika Virus

#FFFFFF

Zika and West Nile are transmitted primarily through mosquito bites. To combat those issues and continue to fight the bite, the City of Florence will be spraying and distributing mosquito biscuits to eliminate the larva and adult mosquitoes. We will be spraying Kontrol 4-4, which has a very low odor and is very low at staining if any. This chemical is dispersed at a rate of 5.5 ounces per minute. With the truck driving between 5-7 miles per hour and a 5mph wind the chemical can drift over a 300 feet area. This spraying has been extremely reliable in the past years. Mosquitoes do not become immune to the spray as they only have a 7-day life span.

If we can all work together by following these simple steps, we will also minimize the chances of being bit by mosquitoes:

  1. Protect yourself and family by using the repellent with deet in it.
  2. Limit the time outdoors in the evening and early morning hours.

  3. Changing your outdoor lighting from bright white to a dull yellow should keep the attraction to a minimum.

  4. Dispose of any stagnant water on your property; i.e. tires, buckets, puddles, and swimming pools.

Public Works will begin spraying and putting out biscuits starting in the middle of April and continue running until the middle of September. If 5.5 ounces of the Kontrol 4-4 is not sufficient, we can go up to 8 ounces per minute. That is as far as we can go according to the rules and regulations but also not limited to one time a week. Schedule will be as follows for 2024:

April 19, 26

May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

June 7, 14, 21, 28

July 5, 12, 19, 26

August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

September 6, 13, 20
