Romaine Lettuce Recall
Customers who have already bought romaine lettuce or products containing romaine lettuce, including bagged salads, whole heads, hearts, salad mixes or prepared salads and cannot confirm the source, are being asked to throw them away and do not eat them. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that people have become ill after eating romaine lettuce grown or originating from the winter growing areas of Yuma, Arizona. This region generally supplies romaine lettuce to the U.S. during November - March each year. No specific grower, supplier, distributor or brand has been identified at this time. RE: Colorado WIC Retailer Training Video— WIC: Simplified
February 14, 2018
TO: WIC-Authorized Retailers
FROM: Colorado WIC Program, Retailer Unit

Dear Retailer Representatives,
Great news: the new WIC training video for authorized retailers, WIC: Simplified, is ready! The video explains the changes affecting retailers since moving to eWIC, including the changing role of cashiers. eWIC is a part of a movement to make WIC transactions simpler and easier for both cashiers and WIC shoppers.

 Is training required?
Yes. Using the video, each Colorado WIC authorized store is required to conduct and document training for staff by the end of April. Store staff that handle WIC transactions should be included in the training, such as managers, bookkeepers, stocking/inventory coordinators, cashiers, trainers, customer service representatives, etc.  After the training session, document the training by returning the attached training receipt form (Retailer Training Video Receipt Form) to Colorado WIC.

How do stores train staff?
To assist in training, a WIC Retailer Training Guide has been provided (via email). This guide lists the steps to complete the training, including showing the film and discussing common issues and solutions. Allow at least 30 minutes to one hour. Please encourage lots of questions and information sharing.

Where is the new video available?
There are several options to access the video:
  • YouTube: Go to www.youtube.com and search for “Colorado WIC retailer training video.”
  • Colorado WIC website: Go to www.ColoradoWIC.com and click the following links: Retailers, General Information, Video WICSimplified Retailer Training Video.
  • Network Broadcast: Some chain stores put the video on their internal training networks. Feel free to incorporate the film into your chain's broadcast.
  • DVD: A DVD version is available upon request.
  • A link to the .mpg4 file on Google Drive of WIC:Simplified is:  WIC:Simplified Link mpg.4
  • Or type the following in your browser: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1u17s9n2mpbuuHz3uVLPnJZ54NxNqVpk2
How do stores make sure cashiers are comfortable and confident after the training?
An optional post-training test is available (sent via email) to confirm understanding of the WIC foods and processes. While not required, it is a great way to confirm that cashiers feel prepared for WIC shoppers. In general, cashiers should answer least 80% of the questions correctly.

How do stores confirm the WIC training?
  1. Obtain Signatures: After the training session(s), staff should sign the “Training Documentation for WIC Retailers” form (a copy of this training form is also available as Exhibit A in the WIC Retailer Handbook).
  2. Keep a Copy at the Store: Keep the completed training documentation form in the store's WIC Manual. WIC staff will look for this completed training form when they conduct monitoring visits. As new employees are hired and trained, add their names and signatures to the form.
  3. CHAINS: Send One Receipt/List of Stores. Your company’s WIC liaison is responsible to confirm the completion of the training by submitting one training receipt form (Retailer Training Video Receipt Form) for your chain and a listing of all authorized stores to Colorado WIC. (Please do not submit the individual Training Documentation for WIC Retailers forms. Those stay at the individual stores in their WIC Manuals.)
  4. Independently Owned/ Operated: Send Receipt. Your store manager/trainer is responsible to confirm the completion of the training by submitting one training receipt form (Retailer Training Video Receipt Form) for your store.
When do we need to have the training completed by?
The deadline for each store to complete the required training is April 30, 2018. Please contact us as soon as possible if an extension is needed.
We value the partnership we have with our retailers and truly appreciate you! Thank you so much.

Colorado WIC is federally funded and is carefully monitoring the midnight tonight expiration of the current continuing resolution.
  • At this time, there is no interruption of services or payments for WIC transactions.
  • In the event there is a shutdown, Colorado WIC intends to use saved funds to keep services going, including payments to authorized retailers for WIC shopping transactions, for as long as possible, likely up to three to four weeks.
  •  We will keep you informed and will notify you with as much time as possible if any interruption is required.
  • Colorado WIC is also in communication with Local WIC Agencies and WIC families and will notify them if there is any delay in benefits.
  • Updated information will be available on the website https://www.ColoradoWIC.com/Retailer Alerts.
Please be assured that, as always, we value our retail partners. Feel free to contact us with input or questions.

Thank you much,

Government reopens until Feb. 8, Colorado WIC benefits, services available

Monday, January 22, 2018 -- Congressional leaders are predicting the government will reopen Tuesday. The Senate passed a temporary spending bill to end the government shutdown, providing funding through February 8 while Congress continues to debate passage of the 2018 federal budget. Both House and Senate approved the bill, and it must now be signed by the president.

Colorado WIC benefits and services remained in place during the weekend shutdown and there currently is enough funding to continue WIC services. WIC wants to reassure participants that they can continue to buy WIC foods and keep clinic appointments. Retailers are encouraged to continue to accept Colorado WIC transactions.
