What is viral hepatitis?
Viral hepatitis is a group of viral infections that cause inflammation of the liver. The most common types are hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. These viruses are very different but they all affect the liver. The liver is an important organ that performs essential functions related to digestion, metabolism, immunity and the storage of nutrients in the body. Viral hepatitis is the leading cause of liver cancer and the most common reason for liver transplants. An estimated 4.4 million Americans are living with chronic hepatitis; most don't know they're infected.
