    Brand inspection of cattle is mandatory

    Inspections are generally arranged by the owner of the livestock to be sold or transported, and it is the inspector's job, among other things, to determine whether the purported owner is in lawful possession of the livestock.

    Brand inspection of horses is mandatory

    A permanent transportation card may be obtained for horses to allow transport within the state of Colorado and out of the state of Colorado without additional inspections.

    Brand inspection of donkeys, burros and mules is mandatory

    Buyers beware: Do not pay for the animal until legal title is conveyed to you as evidenced by the blue copy of the brand inspection certificate showing you as owner.

    Missing or Stolen Livestock Reports

    When you believe that your livestock are missing or may be stolen you should immediately file a report with your local brand inspector and your local law enforcement agency (County Sheriff or State Patrol).

    Livestock Brands

    Brands are livestock's "return address".  It is lawful to mark cattle and horses or sheep and goats with the livestock owner's Colorado recorded brand.

    Alternative Livestock

    The Brand Inspection division has the regulatory responsibility of licensing and inspecting alternative livestock (elk and fallow deer) facilities.
