All off-premise signs adjacent to the State Highway System must obtain a permit from the Department prior to erection. Consult the Department's Right of Way Manual - Chapter 6, Roadside Beautification for details on types of signs and regulations. The Department also has programs for the erection of "Specific Information and Business Signs" and Tourist Oriented Directional Signs for qualifying businesses. Businesses must apply for a permit and pay for the signs.

Applications should be sent to the Safety and Traffic Engineering Branch, which is housed at the Colorado Department of Transportation at the address to the left.

Local Licensing Authorities
Local licensing or zoning authorities frequently regulate permissible signage. Be sure to check with them before erecting business signs.
