First-time applications for certification as a Colorado Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) must:

  • Be 18 years of age
  • Establish lawful presence in the United States
  • Be a graduate of an EMT initial training course at the requested level, and be currently certified by the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) –OR– an out-of-state applicant currently certified by the NREMT. Information on the NREMT is available at www.nremt.org
  • Submit to a Colorado Bureau of Investigation and/or Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal history background check depending upon length of residency in Colorado. Colorado state-recognized EMT education training centers can provide guidance in completing education requirements for Colorado EMT certification. Individuals should contact them directly for specific course information

Physician Advisors are regulated by the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners.
Physician advisors may apply to the Board of Medical Examiners for a waiver to the maximum scope of practice (skill, procedure or medication) allowed for an EMT.
