Sheriffs are county officials elected by vote of the people
Qualifications (30-10-501.5, C.R.S.):
US citizenship; High school diploma or equivalent or college degree; Fingerprint requirements; Cannot be a convicted felon.
Once in office first-time electees or appointees must: Complete 80 hours of training Attain Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification (administered by the POST Board in the Department of Law).

"Level I" and "level IIIa" peace officers -- police officers, deputy sheriffs, undersheriffs, state patrol officers, reserve officers, and others engaged in day-to-day law enforcement -- must be certified prior to appointment.
