letter to South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges, Governor
Owens urged him to reconsider his
opposition to the arranged shipment of radioactive waste from Colorado's
retired Rocky Flats plutonium plant.

Speaks Out For Children In April, many of Governor
Owens' public events have concentrated on protecting children from various
forms of abuse. He signed legislation making Colorado the 9th
AMBER Alert state, and held events to increase awareness of sexual assault

Lady Campaigns Against Underage Drinking First
Lady Frances Owens unveiled a national initiative, “Make a
Difference: Talk to
Your Child About Alcohol”, at Denver's Morey Middle School.
The campaign is aimed at raising awareness of "tween
drinking" (children between 10-12 years of age) and the importance of parental

Selects "One Book" For Colorado Snow in
August, by Pete Hamill,
has been selected by Owens as the Colorado centerpiece of the "One State, One Book" campaign,
where cities and states encourage citizens to read and discuss the book,
becoming, in essence, one big book club.
