The Governor's Residence at the Boettcher Mansion was originally built as the private residence of Alice Cheesman, widow of Denver business tycoon Walter Cheesman. Shortly after Mrs. Cheesman's death in 1923, the home was sold to Claude K. Boettcher and his wife Edna.

In 1959, the Boettcher Foundation donated the residence to the State of Colorado. Since that time, this stately house has served as home to Colorado's sitting Governor and his family. In 2006 the Tebo Visitors Center opened in the renovated Carriage House. This space, along with the newly created Viki and Jack Thompson Gardens, provides expanded usage for State, Public, and Private events.
