Greetings,
The Governor’s Commission on
Community Service is currently developing the 2010-2012 Colorado
Comprehensive State Service Plan.
This plan outlines community
service strategy for Colorado for 2010, 2011 and 2012, establishes
program goals and objectives, and the implementation framework for
the new Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. The plan also lays the
foundation and process for GCCS, with partner agencies, to establish
a plan for creating the Plan for Service by Adults Age 55 and Older.
Federal regulations require that
each state commission prepare a national service plan for the state
that is developed through an open and public process. The plan must
outline how service and volunteering will be used in the state as
strategies to meet critical community needs. (Section 178 (42 U.S.C.
12638, as amended.)
This draft plan incorporates the
critical community needs and service strategies outlined in
2008-2009 Colorado Needs Assessment Report on Community Service,
Volunteerism and Civic Engagement.
New this year is the requirement
that state commissions develop a service plan for adults age 55 and
older. The plan process for that plan is also incorporated in the
draft comprehensive state service plan.
Please review and offer your
comments and observations. We welcome your participation and input,
and will consider your suggestions as part of the final document.
If you have any questions please let us know.

In
honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dedication to community
service and volunteerism, Congress passed an initiative in 1994 to
dedicate the MLK Jr. Holiday as a National Day of Service and
encourages all Americans to give back to their communities.
To
pay tribute to his life and legacy, the Governor’s Commission on
Community Service is encouraging the King Day of Service on January
18, 2010 to be brought to your community and help us expand the
number of projects that take place across Colorado and the US every
year. Connect your service to the life and teachings of Dr. King.
This
year’s events include:
January 12-
Humanitarian Awards and Colorado State Orchestra Concert
January 18-
Day of Service & MLK Marade
January 21-

On Saturday, July 25, 2009, more than 10,000 volunteers showed their
support for Colorado by participating in over 80 projects across the
state. The 11th Annual Colorado Cares Day was a great success thanks
to the many organizations and volunteers who participated in these
projects. Colorado Cares Day coincided this year with
President Obama’s new nationwide summer of service initiative,
United We Serve. The 81-day summer of service initiative began on
June 22, 2009 and will end on the new September 11th Day of
Remembrance and Service. Colorado will extend volunteer
opportunities through August, encouraging a sustained and
collaborative effort throughout the summer to meet community needs
and make service a way of life for Coloradoans.

The Governor’s Commission on
Community Service, under the Office of Lieutenant Governor Barbara O'Brien,
promotes the ethic of service and
volunteerism throughout Colorado, and carries out initiatives in the
areas of mentoring and literacy.
The Governor’s Commission supports and
promotes volunteer service to all citizens as an effective means to
address community needs and foster a collective commitment to lifelong
community service.
The Commission builds on the enthusiasm, dedication and
combined expertise of individual citizens and public and private systems
to expand civic participation and engagement in solving challenges faced
by Colorado communities.
Mission
The Governor's Commission serves as a catalyst for the promotion and
expansion of community service and volunteerism to all Colorado
residents as an effective means to address civic and social issues and
improve the overall well being of communities throughout the state.
Goals
-
To advocate for service and volunteerism as essential components in
sustaining healthy Colorado communities.
-
To create mechanisms which facilitate greater cooperation,
communication
and partnerships among agencies working in the service and volunteerism
fields.
-
To promote service and volunteerism as an integral component of
education at all levels and as a lifelong responsibility.
-
To increase public awareness, appreciation, support and participation
in
service and volunteerism.
-
To increase financial support for volunteer initiatives from a broad
range
of public and private sources.
In addition to its national and community service charge, the Commission
works to promote and expand volunteerism and civic participation through
initiatives such as: Colorado Mentoring, which provides
leadership in the area of youth mentoring; Colorado Cares, a
statewide day of service, and Citizen Corps, an effort to
encourage and prepare volunteers to respond to natural
disasters/homeland security situations.
