Wind for Schools Program
The Governor's Energy Office (GEO) supports the Wind for Schools (WfS) program. WfS aims to engage rural school teachers and students in wind energy education, equip college students in wind energy applications and education to provide the growing wind industry with interested and equipped engineers, and to introduce wind energy on a small scale to rural communities to initiate a discussion of the benefits and issues associated with wind energy.
Selected host schools receive a small 1.8 kW wind turbine to provide students with a concrete example of how wind energy works, while allowing for an exciting hands-on educational opportunity using state-of-the-art technology.
Wind Powering America (WPA), a division of the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), launched the Wind for Schools program in 2005. NREL conducted a WfS pilot project in Colorado that resulted in one small turbine project in Walsenburg, wind energy curriculum development, and a great deal of enthusiasm for the WfS program’s potential. The approach of the WfS program is to replicate the process piloted in Walsenburg by installing many more small wind turbines at rural schools in Colorado.
