Index to Water Decrees and Transfers 
in Water Division 1 (1899-1926)

The Colorado State Archives has custody of one box (46499) of water decrees and transfers from the Water Resources Division of the Colorado Natural Resources Department. The box consists of a compilation of decrees and water transfers from Water Division 1 that includes the counties of Denver, Douglas, Park, Jefferson, Weld, Larimer, Boulder, Jackson and Logan. We have published this index because there may be information that the legal community and general public may find useful in their research of water rights.

The "Description" field cites the ditch or reservoir that the decree or water transfer applies to. The "Number" field refers to either the page number or the document number in the volume. "County, Case #" describes either the county or region (such as Cache La Poudre) or provides a court and case number if that information is given in the document. "Den. Dist. #54658", for instance, refers to a Denver District Court Case #54658 which litigated the water rights to the 49 Ranch Ditch. The "Vol" field cites the volume in which this information is found. The "Date" field is the date of the document and not necessarily the date of the original decree or water transfer. While the documents, themselves, span approximately 1899-1926, there is information in some of the documents that date from the 1860's.
