E X E C U T I V E O R D E R

CALLING THE NATIONAL GUARD TO STATE ACTIVE DUTY TO ASSIST
IN THE APPREHENSION OF ESCAPED PRISONERS

WHEREAS, on October 29, 1997, two prisoners escaped from a Department of
Corrections facility; and

WHEREAS, as a result of the escape, the lives of people in the Canon City area were in
danger; and

WHEREAS, it was necessary to use helicopters to assist in the apprehension of the
escaped prisoners; and

WHEREAS, the National Guard was able to provide equipment and personnel to assist
the Department of Corrections in apprehending the escaped prisoners;

NOW THEREFORE, I, Roy Romer, Governor of the State of Colorado, under the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of Colorado, do hereby confirm my verbal order issued on October 29, 1997 that the National Guard be called to state active duty, for no more than two days, to assist the Department of Corrections in apprehending the escaped prisoners.
